It is considered one of the most important museums in the city and province of Cadiz and the existing collections come mainly from the sites catalogued in the municipal area itself, covering the urban municipality, the banks of the Guadalete River and several Neolithic, Phoenician and Roman sites.
The origin of the museum is the Municipal Archaeological Deposit established in the Old Town Hall of Jerez in 1.873, a building where the Library was located.
